Smudge

This is the oldest member of the family. I got Smudge from a friend of ours. She had been born under a porch and had a stray cat for a mother. Once the kittens were six weeks old, I visited and managed to get her out from under the porch with a lot of coaxing. She then rode the whole way home with me, perched on my shoulder and looking out the window of my car. At the time, I was living on the 13th floor of an apartment building, and she gave us more than one scare. Our next door neighbour had her over for a visit (she crawled along the railing of my veranda 13floors up), and gave her some milk, which of course hooked her on the stuff. She then went traipsing two doors down (once again along the railing) one day while Rob and I were out bike riding. We arrived home, and no trace of the cat. Panic set in, and we scoured the apartment, looking for her. No sign. Rob decided that it was time that we went down to the parking lot and checked to see if anything had survived a 13 storey fall. Just as he was about to go down, we saw a piece of paper that had been delivered through my mail slot. Much like a ransom note, our neighbours had cut out newspaper letters saying "We have your cat. Apartment 1301. We're not sure what to feed her. Come and get her". So we walked down the hall, gingerly knocked on the door, and brought her home, desperate for the litter box. She remains with us to this day, now 6 years old, and most definitely an indoor cat.
